Hoedlmoser moves to USST men’s speed coach

U.S. alpine team announces 2014-15 coaches

Four-time U.S. Ski Team International Coach of the Year Alex Hoedlmoser has been named Head Coach for the U.S. Ski Team men’s speed team, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) revealed in a May 7 press release.

The new head coach replaces Andreas Evers, who was fired last month, according to an Associated Press report.

Hoedlmoser, from St. Anton, Aust., competed for eight years with the Austrian national ski team, ending in 1992, and then spent four years as a professional ski racer. He has spent the last 17 years working with the U.S. women’s alpine speed team, including the last four as head coach.

During his tenure with women’s alpine, he led American athletes to 18 Olympic and World Championship medals and over 150 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup podiums.

Hoedlmoser’s former head coach position with the women’s alpine program won’t be replaced at this time, the USSA explained.

Newly hired coach Stefan Abplanalp leads the women’s speed program. Roland Pfeifer enters his fourth year heading up the women’s technical team. Trevor Wagner continues to lead the Europa Cup training group.

Forest Carey, Bernd Brunner and Randy Pelkey will remain as head coaches of the men's multi, technical and development teams respectively, while TJ Lanning will move from coaching the men's speed group to the Europa Cup coaching staff.

The 2015 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup season is slated to start Oct. 25-26 in Soelden, Austria.

Highlighting the upcoming season is the 2015 International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championships Feb. 2-15 at Vail-Beaver Creek, Co.

In Wednesday’s announcement of coaches and changes, USST Alpine Director Patrick Riml said about Hoedlmoser, “In the nearly two decades he’s worked with the women’s alpine program, Alex has helped lead that group to a truly best in the world program.

“He has also been able to bring in a world-class coaching staff in Roland Pfeifer, Stef Abplanalp, Trevor Wagner and their assistant coaches. We both feel the program is in a good place for the women’s staff to collectively continue the highest level of leadership.

Men’s Alpine Head Coach Sasha Rearick said, “Over the past Olympic cycle Alex and I have worked closely together as head coaches for our respective teams. His track record with the women’s program speaks for itself and I feel fortunate to be able to bring his perspective, experience and vision to our men’s speed program.

Hoedlmoser added, “The years I’ve spent with the women’s program have been truly rewarding, but the team is really strong right now and the right coaches are in place to continue that direction. For me, this move is extremely motivating.

“Sasha has built an impressive program with incredible athletes and coaches. It will be a challenge for me to step over to the men’s side, but I feel I’ll bring a perspective that will enhance the professionalism and focus that this staff has already produced.
