SVSEF athletes tabbed to U.S. national teams

USSA makes nominations for 2014-15

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) made its team nominations for the 2014-15 season.

And the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation is well represented with four current athletes named to alpine, freeski and snowboard teams, SVSEF communications director Jody Zarkos announced in a May 7 press release.

Chase Josey and Wing Tai Barrymore return as U.S. team members. Josey, 19, has been promoted from the U.S. Snowboard Rookie Halfpipe Team to the Pro Team.

Kipling Weisel, 19, was named to the U.S. Alpine D Team. And Jacob Beebe, 14, is one of four athletes on the Freeski Rookie Halfpipe Team.

Three SVSEF alum earned national team nods with Sophia Schwartz, 23, tabbed for the Freestyle A Team; Simi Hamilton, 26, on the USSA Cross Country A Team and Noah Hoffman, 24, on the B Team for cross country skiing.

More details about the selections: Barrymore, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on May 1, heads up the 12-person Freeski Pro Halfpipe Team, which is coached by former SVSEF park and pipe coach and alpine alumni Ben Verge.

Barrymore, who in the last two years has suffered successive knee injuries, looked to be regaining his form this winter with an eighth place finish in a NorAm skier halfpipe at Aspen, Co., in February.

Beebe, who will be 15 June 15, is now teammates with his chief rival Birk Irving of Winter Park, Co., on the Freeski D team. Beebe finished fourth in ski halfpipe in March at the FIS World Championships in Italy.

In all, 38 men and women were nominated to four alpine teams; A, B, C, and D with five men on the D Team, 1 on C, 11 on B and 7 on A including USST leaders David Chodounsky, Travis Ganong, Jared Goldberg, Tim Jitloff, Ted Ligety, Bode Miller and Andrew Weibrecht.

Weisel is one of the most promising U.S. alpine ski racers.

Dating back to Jan. 2014, Weisel recorded 16 top-10 finishes in FIS alpine racing, twice skiing to fourth place. Accepted to Dartmouth College, Weisel won the men's slalom title at the Junior National Championships last May at Mammoth Mountain, Ca.

Josey, a member of Community School's Class of 2013, wrapped up the 2013-14 season on a high note. He rode to second place in the Red Bull Double-Pipe Challenge at Aspen, Co., and claimed the championship at the Dick’s Ditch Classic at Jackson Hole, Wyo. He also won a Burton U.S. Open qualifying halfpipe at Seven Springs, Pa.

Josey, Barrymore and Weisel are all members of the SVSEF Gold Team created in 2005 to aid elite athletes in their quest to compete and achieve on an international level.

SVSEF Gold Team snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington captured the gold medal in women's snowboard halfpipe at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
