WRHS distance runners earn state berths

At districts in Jerome

Senior Janel Passey won the girls’ 3200-meter run in a close finish with onrushing junior Kenya Schott to highlight Wood River High School’s efforts Wednesday on Day One of the Great Basin Conference 4A district meet.

Passey (12:06.1) held off Schott (12:06.5), who had been fourth in the four-runner lead group until 600 meters remained. Third was Burley freshman Charlotte Nyblade (12:14) and fourth was WRHS senior Mariah Stout (12:15.0).

All four qualified for the State 4A competition May 16-17 at Dona Larsen Park, Boise.

Wood River junior Alexis Gonzalez also qualified for state by placing third in 10:26 in a heady field of top 4A runners that featured race winner Jeremy Stark of Twin Falls (9:52) and Erik Nordquist of Jerome (9:56), both seniors.

Putting themselves in the picture for state with a personal-best 1:56.9 time for third place in the girls’ sprint medley was the Wood River foursome of Lexi Browne, Michelle Mason, Sara Lichtenberg and Janel Passey. Twin Falls, with the state’s top time, held off Canyon Ridge for the two automatic state berths.

Wood River’s fourth-place boys’ medley relay in 4:07.9 had Alberto Gonzalez, Kyle Mungal, Brandon Yagla and Alexis Gonzalez.

Other 3200m times for Wood River Wednesday were, for the girls, Amanda Passey 14:13, Amy Cantrell 14:00 and Margot Griffith 14:34 and, for the boys, Irvin Gonzalez 11:30, Ryan Anderson 12:07, Nathan Stouffer 12:08, Beckett Nasvik-Dykhouse 13:22, Cormac Heneghan 13:33 and Colby Castle 14:09.

The two-day meet concluded Thursday with field event and running finals at the Jerome High School oval.
