District track meets loom for area teams

     Coming off a successful Bob Shay Invitational track and field meet Wednesday in Hailey, the Wood River High School track and field teams did a quick turnaround and competed Friday at the Bru-Hawk Relays at Bruin Stadium in Twin Falls.

     Freshman Michelle Mason (12.94 seconds) won the 100-meter dash with a season-best time and sophomore Sara Lichtenberg (5-2) captured the high jump with personal record. Hailey junior Taylor Douthit placed second in discus (127-8) and was fourth in shotput (42-1.5) with a season-best toss in that event.

     Wood River’s girls’ distance medley 4000m relay placed first in 13:43.78 with Kenya Schott, Janel Passey, Amy Cantrell and Mariah Stout. That group also placed second in the 4x800m relay in 11:10.3.

     At Thursday’s Shay meet, the Wolverine girls’ distance medley relay team established a new stadium record of 13:28.88 in winning the event.

     The Wood River boys’ distance medley 4000m relay squad placed second Friday in 12:10.96 with Irving Gonzalez, Ryan Anderson, Cormac Heneghan and Alexis Gonzalez. It was 17 seconds faster than their Shay time.

     Finishing third in the 4x100m relay (47.5) and 4x200m (1:35.00) were Noah Russell, Alberto Gonzalez Jr., Brandon Yagla and Kyle Mungal of Wood River. Wood River also had a second-place 4x800m relay with Nathan Stouffer, Ryan Anderson, Irvin Gonzalez and Alexis Gonzalez.

     The girls’ 4x400m relay placed third in 4:43.0 with Michelle Casas, Amy Cantrell, Amanda Passey and Sara Lichtenberg.

     Wood River goes to Jerome High for the 4th District 4A state-qualifying competition Wednesday and Thursday, May 7-8 with field events starting at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 3 p.m. The top four individuals and top two relay teams qualify for the State 4A track meet May 16-17 at Dona Larsen Park in Boise.

     In another meet staged Friday, Camas County junior Isaac Simon set a personal record and State 1A-best high jump of 6-2 in winning the event during the 19-school Meet of Champions at Buhl High School. Competing were 11 1A schools, four 2A schools and four 3A schools.

     Simon also placed seventh in triple jump (38-11). Musher senior Taylor Gorringe was fourth in shotput (33-3.5) and fourth in discus (104-2). Hunter Rasmussen finished seventh in triple jump (29-7) and senior Jessica Lanier was eight in discus (93-9).

     Camas County joins Carey High School and 12 other small-school teams for the 4th District 1A track meet Friday and Saturday, May 9-10 at Jerome High School. Field events begin Friday at 1 p.m. and track events at 3 p.m. On Saturday, field begins at 10 a.m. and track at 11 a.m.

     The top four individuals and top two relays qualify for the State 1A track meet May 16-17 in Middleton.
