WRHS softball goes 1-1 on first day of GBC meet

Baseball team exits with 10-4 loss at Burley

     Wood River High School softball and baseball teams tried to capture tournament magic Saturday, May 3 in Great Basin Conference games at Twin Falls and Burley.

     Coach Dale Martin’s Wolverine girls (16-8), seeded No. 3 on the first day of the GBC tourney, knocked off No. 6 Burley for the fourth time in four tries this season, this time 13-3 in six run-rule frames.

     But No. 2 Canyon Ridge has a similar hold on the Wood River girls and the Riverhawks deposited the Wolverines into the loser bracket of the six-team double elimination tournament with a 6-1 victory at the Twin Falls High School diamond.

     It was Canyon Ridge’s fourth win in four games against Wood River.

     Coach Dale Martin’s Wolverines returned to Twin Falls Tuesday where they tried to stay alive playing the winner of the Minico-Jerome loser-out preliminary contest.

     Meanwhile, at Burley Saturday, coach Donnie Green’s Wood River baseball team (10-12) couldn’t find any of the magic that helped the No. 4 Wolverines capture a dramatic 7-6 home extra-inning win over No. 6 Canyon Ridge Thursday in Hailey.

     No. 5 Burley ended the season of resurgent Wood River by a 10-4 score, in the process beating the No. 4 Wolverines in both tournament meetings of the two teams.

Softball in Twin Falls

     Held scoreless by Burley pitcher Zoe Ferrin for the first five innings of Thursday’s 4-3 Wolverine “Senior Day” victory, the Hailey girls didn’t get warmed up offensively against Ferrin until the fifth inning of Saturday’s tourney opener.

     Trailing 2-0, Wood River erupted for eight runs in the fifth and tacked on five more runs in the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule 13-3.

     Wood River out-hit Burley 22-4 and committed only one error behind the pitching of junior Brittney Bradley (4 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 BB, 8 K).

     Senior infielder Shelby Cooper (4-for-5, double, 5 RBI) continued her hot hitting and freshman Blair Radford scorched the ball at a 3-for-3 clip, making it seven straight hits for her against Burley.

     Other Hailey hitters were Samantha Sutton (3 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Chloe Evans (2 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Lacy Harrington (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Ashley Hicks (2 hits, 1 RBI), Cassidy Cooper (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Bradley (2 hits, 1 RBI).

     Later Saturday, Canyon Ridge’s fine sophomore pitcher Kayler Detmer beat Wood River for the fourth time this season, this time with a complete-game four-hit 6-1 victory. Bradley (9-6) absorbed the loss.

     Coach Martin said afterward, “We gave up four runs in the first inning and never really recovered. We are still having trouble hitting good pitching. Hopefully that will turn around in Tuesday’s games.”

 

Tournament baseball in Burley

     Burley senior righthander Hunter Breshears, who earned the one inning save in the 10-8 Bobcat victory in Hailey April 29 that opened the GBC tournament, threw a complete game in Saturday’s 10-4 Burley home win over Wood River.

     Breshears (7 hits, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K) was solid with runners on base and allowed only single runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings.

     Wood River hitters included Cameron Benson (2 hits, triple), Reide Whitehead (2 hits, double) and Cade Schott (2 singles), while Owen Gifford walked twice and scored twice for the Wolverines.

     Sparked by the top of its batting order, the Bobcats banged out 13 hits against Hailey hurlers Benson (2-1) and Finn Isaacson.

     Top Burley producers were junior shortstop Mario Del Bosque (3 hits, triple, 2 runs) sophomore Gabe Rebollozo (3 hits, triple, 3 runs), Breshears (2 hits, 2 runs) and senior RJ Navarez (2 runs).

     Wood River, fielding a team filled with sophomores and freshmen, went 7-6 to end its season.

     This year’s team accomplished much, including a 12-4 home win over Minico April 7 that ended a seven-year, 23-game losing skid to Spartan teams and snapped a streak of 53 straight GBC league losses; and a 2-1 win over Canyon Ridge in Twin Falls that ended a streak of 57 league road losses over four seasons.
