High school rodeo comes to Hailey this weekend

Cowgirls, cowboys make stop at Carey

     Three cowgirls separated themselves from the rest of the 5th District High School Rodeo pack during last weekend’s circuit stop at Carey’s Blaine County Fairgrounds.

     Collecting plenty of points at Carey were Dietrich Rodeo Club cowgirl Katelyn Perkins hailing from Geneva in southeastern Idaho (a 59-point gain), Valley’s Marlee Mussmann (58 points) and Gooding’s Cassie Bahe (plus-47 on the weekend).

     After eight rodeos at four different sites, the trio stands alone at the top of the girls’ overall standings—Perkins with 209.5 points, Mussmann with 194 and goat tying/breakaway roping event leader Bahe with 186.

     Perkins and team roping partner Wyatt Williams of Gooding lead that event with 63 points for the season, although they settled for third-place rides of 22.7 seconds and 18.6 seconds at Carey’s arena.

     Jerome’s Cheyenne Logan leads the barrel racing standings with 70 points and has 50 points to lead the polebending ranks—her only two events. Logan is sixth in the overall standings with 120 points, behind fifth-place Bailey Gough of Gooding (140 season points).

     Carey Rodeo Club’s Kylie Castle added 15 points to her season total in the home dirt and is 11th in the overall standings with 66.5 points. She is sixth in goat tying with 33.5 points for the season. Castle posted a season-best third in breakaway roping at 4.5 seconds in Saturday’s rodeo.

     Kali Castle of the Carey Rodeo Club and Sarah Rau of the Wood River Rodeo Club had a productive weekend at Carey. She added 13 points highlighted by a fifth place at 10.8 seconds and eighth place at 11.3 seconds in goat tying.

     Other area cowgirls on horses at Carey were Sarah Rau and Tayler Bosch of the Wood River Rodeo Club, Whitnee Hurless and Adriane Maguire from the Camas County Rodeo Club. Maguire had sixth place in pole bending Friday with a 22.183 time.

     Hurless is the top area cowgirl in the barrel racing standings (8th place, 20.5 points) and breakaway roping (9th, 17).

     Valley’s Cody Ruby won Carey’s saddle bronc events with 72-point and 62-point rides and stretched his circuit-leading boys’ overall point total to 155, which is 29 points ahead of Wyatt Williams (126). In third place is Brody Smith of Valley (108.5).

     Carey’s Matt Whitworth (45 points) stands ninth in the boys’ all-around and seventh in calf roping with 23 points.

     Other district rodeos are May 9-10 at Hailey Rodeo Arena and May 23-24 at Gooding for district finals. This weekend’s Hailey rodeo begins Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.

     The remaining two cow cutting dates for the 5th District are today, Wednesday, May 7 and also on May 14 at Danny Thomason’s in Tuttle.
