Police investigate gun theft in Hailey

Semi automatic weapons stolen from sports shop

    Hailey police are investigating the theft last week of five semi automatic handguns from High Desert Sports on North River Street in Hailey.
    Hailey police Lt. Steve England said Monday that the theft occurred between 1:45 and 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30. He said an alarm went off at the time the store was broken into. However, England said the alarm was treated as a malfunction and police weren’t notified until 10 a.m. later in the morning.
    He said that usually police would have been notified when the alarm was activated.
    “There was a misstep in the system,” England said, declining to elaborate.
    England said entry was made into High Desert Sports by forcing open a door. The guns were then taken in what he described as a “smash and grab.”
    “Whatever person or persons who did this was pretty fast about it and got away with five handguns,” England said.

    The guns were valued at more than $3,000. They included two Beretta 9mm guns, one Glock 9mm, one FNH 9mm and one H&K 40 caliber.
    “Obviously, we’re really concerned because we don’t know where the guns are now or who has them or where they are in the community.” England said. “Any burglary is concerning, but especially so when you’re talking about automatic handguns.”
    England said the store is located in a residential area and police are hoping that someone heard or saw something the morning of the break-in. He asked that anyone with information on the crime or the whereabouts of the guns contact Hailey police at (208) 788-3531.
