Carey girls back on top in Northside track

Lighthouse captures boys’ title

It was a tremendous team effort for the Carey High School girls’ track and field team Wednesday at the nine-school Northside Conference Championship meet held at Derrick Parke Memorial Field in Carey.

Carey’s girls (123 points) won their first Northside Conference title in 10 years by a 10-point margin over Castleford’s Wolves (113). Camas County of Fairfield, having won seven straight Northside crowns, settled for third place with 89.

Sprinters led the way for coach Lane Kirkland’s Carey girls as the Panthers piled up 47 in the sprints and 30 by winning three of the four relays along with the 20 points provided by sophomore Medin Cenarrusa who swept hurdles.

Carey sophomore Kelsey Barker (1:06.80) won the 400-meter dash ahead of senior teammate Lilly Rivera (1:08.80) to provide the sixth Panther victory out of the 17 events. It was Carey’s first Northside Championship title since 2004, a year that capped a run of 12 Carey girls’ titles in 13 years.

Wednesday, Panther girls won 4x100-meter, 4x400m and sprint medley relays. Camas County senior Taylor Gorringe took the shotput and sophomore Ava Mazzoni provided the Community School’s best finish, second at 1600m.

Other double winners for the girls were Dietrich sophomore Mesa Heimerdinger (800m/1600m), North Valley Academy senior Samantha Lofgran (100m/200m) and two Castleford freshmen—Haddee Reynolds (long jump/triple jump) and Jade Etelu (shotput/high jump).

Carey’s other second place came from Kelsey Barker (200m), while Camas County added seconds from Gorringe (shotput) and senior Jessica Lanier (discus).

The Lighthouse Christian Academy Lions (183 points) ran away with Wednesday’s boys’ team title with 53 points in the sprints, 31 in hurdles, 36 relays and 36 in the field. Castleford (125) was second and Carey (96.5) third.

Lighthouse’s boys won eight of the 17 events led by junior hurdler Gage Silva (both hurdle events) and freshman Eric Silva (100m/200m). Dietrich senior Jacob Dalton breezed to three victories in the 400m, 1600m and 3200m.

The Carey boys pulled off wins in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Camas County junior Isaac Simon won triple jump, and Castleford junior Morgan Shipp took the shotput/discus.

Second places from Carey went to Christian Zarate (100m), Luis Garcia (long jump) and Matt Whitworth (discus), while Isaac Simon of Camas County was second in high jump and teammate Cale Homer second in triple jump.
