Relays lift Carey to success in home track meet

Northside finals are today in Carey


     Success in the relays lifted the Carey High School track and field teams to their best team results of the 2014 season during the 15-school Carey Invitational meet Thursday at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

     Panther girls (92 points) won three of four relays and amassed 38 points in relays to beat Butte County of Arco (81 points) and Mackay (80) for first place. Camas County of Fairfield (47) was fourth and the Community School of Sun Valley (26.5) placed ninth.

     Castleford’s boys (112 points) separated themselves from the pack with 50 points in the field. But the second-place Carey boys (88) also won three of four relays for 38 points and added 23 in sprints and 23 in field on their home track.

     Taking individual gold medals for Carey were sophomore Medin Cenarrusa in both hurdles events (18.20 seconds, 56.80) and senior Christian Zarate in the 200-meter dash (24.60). The Carey girls and boys captured the 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relays, plus second places in medley.

     Camas County junior Isaac Simon won the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (38-3), while Fairfield senior Taylor Gorringe captured discus (100-4).

     Individual second places for Carey went to Zarate (100m) and Luis Garcia (long jump). Earning seconds for Camas were Erick Peterson (400m), Cale Homer (triple jump) and Gorringe (shotput).

     Taking third places were Carey’s Joe Parke (high jump) and Clarissa Kirkland (long jump), plus Camas’ Hunter Rasmussen (triple jump) and Ariel Reedy (discus).

     Top placings for the Community School were junior Sara Runkel with a fourth in the 400-meter dash and sophomore Ava Mazzoni with a fourth place in the 1600m.

     Two of the top Idaho 1A runners this spring dominated Thursday’s distance events. Dietrich senior Jacob Dalton won the 800m by 14.4 seconds and the 1600m by 31.3 seconds. Butte County freshman Macy Hansen swept the 800m, 1600m and 3200m distance events.

     Other multiple event winners were North Valley Academy’s Samantha Lofgran (100m, 200m), Castleford’s Morgan Shipp (shotput, discus), Dietrich’s Hazen Weber (both hurdles) and Mackay’s Chelbee Rosenkrance (400m, HJ).
