Runners lift WRHS girls to Burley title

Tune-up for today’s Bob Shay meet

In a tune-up for today’s Bob Shay Invitational track and field meet in Hailey, the Wood River High School track team had a good day Thursday during the five-school Burley Invitational meet for Great Basin Conference 4A squads.

Wood River’s girls won 11 of the 18 events on the day—10 of them in individual competitions—and piled up 176 points to capture the girls’ title by 64 points over Twin Falls (112).

The Wolverines amassed 50 points in the sprints, 56 distances, 24 relays and 32 in the field to emerge as the top team.

Capturing two events apiece were senior Janey Passey (400-meter dash, 1600m distance run), sophomore Bailey Rierden (long jump, triple jump) and freshman Michelle Mason (100m, 200m dashes).

Adding gold in individual events were senior Mariah Stout (3200m), sophomore Sara Lichtenberg (high jump) and two freshman, Pilar Pennell (300m intermediate hurdles) and Amy Cantrell (800m).

The Wood River girls won the sprint medley relay in a personal-best 2:03.7 time with Rierden, Mason, Sara Lichtenberg and Passey.

Second places for the Hailey girls went to Sara Lichtenberg (400m), Margot Griffith (800m) and the 4x200m relay squad.

Hailey’s boys also enjoyed a solid day, placing third in the team totals with a balanced 78 points. The Jerome Tiger boys (234 points) were the overwhelming team winners, capturing 16 of the 18 events.

Wood River’s boys didn’t have any first places because of Jerome’s dominance.

But the Wolverines nailed down seconds from juniors Taylor Douthit (discus), Alexis Gonzalez (3200m) and Kyle Mungal (400m), plus soph Noah Russell (300m intermediate hurdles) along with the medley and 4x400m relay teams.

Each Great Basin school except Jerome is due for today’s Bob Shay meet beginning at 3 p.m. with the distance medley relay event at Hailey’s Phil Homer Field. The 1A Div. 1 Challis Vikings are also expected to compete.

Challis is due to bring one of the best female sprinters in the state of Idaho. Junior Hannah Cain, the reigning State 1A 200-meter dash queen, owns the top 200m time among all Gem State athletes this spring with a 25.76-second clocking. She has the second-best 100m time (11.43) and also the best in 1A. Cain boasts the second-fastest 1A time in the 400m with a 1:00.88 mark.

Hailey athletes are also signed up for the Bru-Hawk Relays Friday, May 2 at Bruin Stadium in Twin Falls, with field events starting at 5:30 p.m. and track events at 6 p.m. Other teams due are Jerome, Twin Falls, Canyon Ridge, Burley and Mountain Home.
