High school rodeos coming to Blaine County

Carey this weekend, Hailey the next

With three April rodeos and six go-rounds already in the books, the 2014 5th District high school rodeo circuit is headed to Blaine County over the next two weekends.

Carey’s Blaine County Fairgrounds will host the first stop Friday and Saturday, May 2-3 with the Friday show at 7 p.m., and Saturday event at 2 p.m. And Hailey Rodeo Arena hosts the following event, May 9-10.

Shoshone’s Lincoln County Fairgrounds was last weekend’s circuit stop. There, Dietrich Rodeo Club cowgirl Katelyn Perkins hailing from Geneva in southeastern Idaho piled up 55.5 points and surged into the girls’ all-around lead with 150.5 points in six go-rounds.

Perkins has earned 47 points in team roping with Wyatt Williams of Gooding to go with her second-place 41.5 points in breakaway roping. She leads by 11.5 over Gooding’s Cassie Bahe (139). Bahe is breakaway and goat tying leader after the three April stops in Glenns Ferry, Twin Falls and Shoshone.

Carey’s Kylie Castle is 10th in the standings with 51.5 points including 29.5 for fifth place in goat tying. Fairfield’s Whitnee Hurless (36.5) is 16th in the overall including sixth place in barrel racing (21.5 points). She logged a third-place 17.543-second time in Friday’s barrels at Shoshone.

Valley’s Cody Ruby (118 points, 45 at Shoshone) and Brody Smith (94, 47 at Shoshone) locked horns last weekend with team roping and calf roping Wyatt Williams (92) right behind in the boys’ all-around.

Carey’s Matt Whitworth (45 points) stands sixth in the boys’ all-around and sixth in calf roping with 23 points.

Others expected to compete at Carey and Hailey are Tayler Bosch, Gaje Moats and Sarah Rau of the Wood River Rodeo Club; Kali Castle of Carey; Adriane McGuire and Etta Seaman of Camas County.

The second cow cutting of the season was held April 16. Competing were two from the Wood River Rodeo Club—Kendra Price and Bosch.

Price earned 8 points for the evening with 60-point and 62-point rides. Bosch scored two 60-point efforts at Van Greenwell’s in Paul April 16.

The leader after two cuttings is Jacee Lancaster of Valley with 40 points on rides of 72, 71, 69 and 70 points. In second place is Jessica Anderson of Gooding, 36 points with rides of 70, 69, 68 and 67.
