Hemingway addition gets green light

P&Z approves plan to expand school cafeteria

By FREDDIE HARRIS

After a brief hearing Monday, the Ketchum Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously gave design-review approval to a 3,200-square-foot addition to Hemingway Elementary School.
The project will expand the cafeteria and provide the school with a new music room, reading room and storage space. The improvements will reduce student lunch sittings from three to two, and will give staff and children more time between sittings to negotiate lunchtime traffic.
The existing school parking lot will be resurfaced and drainage will be improved. Outside construction materials will match existing materials and color schemes.
LED-style light fixtures installed outside the building “will be diligent in terms of wattage use and safe coverage of parking areas,” architect Jolyon H. Sawrey said. The lighting is intended to not diminish natural lighting on walkways.
Sawrey said the improvements would lead to better ventilation and the possibility for lunch room skylights.
Sawrey added that public access will not be impacted, with one exception: An existing asphalt driveway located on the east side of the building will be removed and replaced with lawn and a new pedestrian road-mix path.
According to a staff report, the addition will not impact community views. Senior City Planner Rebecca Bundy called the proposal “a small addition compared with the size of the existing school.” She also noted that Hemingway neighbors were not concerned with the changes.
There were no public comments or commissioner concerns. P&Z Chair Rich Fabiano said he is “very proud of Hemingway.”
Construction is scheduled to take place this summer.
