Resort skier count drops 10 percent

Figure down nearly 40,000 from average

Reflecting a winter of mild weather and relatively scarce snow, skier counts at Sun Valley Resort during the past season were down about 10 percent from last year.
According to figures provided by the resort, total skier numbers at Bald and Dollar mountains combined were 348,269 during the past season and 386,782 in the 2012-13 season. According to U.S. Forest Service data, the average for the five seasons previous to the 2013-14 season was 381,541 skiers and boarders.
Sun Valley’s best season was in 1982, when the resort hosted 476,300 skier days. Its worst was during the severe drought winter of 1977, when it had only 50,000 skier days.
Although natural snowfall was scarce until February, the resort’s snowmaking system provided for skiing on most of Bald Mountain throughout the season and allowed Sun Valley to keep the mountain open until the projected closing date. The season closed on Sunday, April 20.
