It was a game of runs in more ways than one when the Wood River Wolverine and Buhl Tribe baseball teams clashed on a chilly Tuesday in a non-conference game at Hailey’s Founders Field.

There were 34 runs and 34 hits in the two-and-a-half hour marathon. Wood River had the first “run” of success, building a 17-3 lead after three innings. Buhl put together the final streak pounding 12 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Yet Wood River (9-10, 5-4 home) held on behind the relief pitching of winner Tyler Price (3-1) to beat Buhl by a 19-15 score and sweep the two-game season series between the traditional ball field rivals.

The Wolverines had great success atop their batting order with the 1-2-3-4 batters hitting a combined 13-for-16 with 11 runs scored and 10 RBI.

Leadoff hitter Owen Gifford (4 hits, 4 runs, 2 RBI)) reached base his first five trips and opened Wood River’s two-run fifth with a single that helped keep Buhl at arm’s length. Price (4 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBI) cracked the ball with authority and catcher Reide Whitehead added two hits. Clean-up hitter Finn Isaacson (3-for-3, 5 RBI) did just that.

Starter Isaacson, a senior bound for Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., allowed no earned runs in two innings of work. Freshman Nelson Cantrell threw middle relief, and Price mopped up with two-and-two thirds innings of five-hit relief for his fourth win in nine games.

No. 9 hitter Cantrell delivered a two-run single in Wood River’s nine-run, 14-batter first inning, and first baseman Adrian Rojas added an RBI single. Third baseman Cade Schott belted a two-run triple, Kyle Weller added two singles, Will Long scored three runs and Armando Gomez chipped in with a run-scoring single.

Leading Buhl were Joel Hamilton (2 hits, 4 runs, 3 RBI), Michael Lively (3 hits, 4 RBI) and Ian Compton (3 hits).

Depending on the weather, Wood River was due to finish its regular-season schedule against Burley today, Friday, and open the GBC tourney on Tuesday, April 29 against an opponent yet to determined.

Bruins dominate WRHS

The Twin Falls Bruins, seeking their third straight Great Basin Conference tournament title, have dominated Idaho opponents this spring and Tuesday’s game against Wood River High in Hailey was no exception.

Scoring seven runs in the first inning, Twin Falls (16-2, 12-0 league) breezed 14-0 in five innings with a 12-hit attack. Hailey coach Dale Martin said, “Complete domination. We battled but were completely out-matched. Twin Falls should win state in a breeze.”

Wood River senior Cassidy Cooper, bound for Dawson Community College (Glendive, Mt.) softball with her sister Shelby, managed the only hit off of hard-throwing Twin Falls pitcher Rainey Dyreson. Last November, Dyreson signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 softball at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Martin said, “Dyreson is the real deal with a scholarship to Oregon State. She is one of eight seniors for Twin Falls.”

The outcome ended Wood River’s seven-game winning streak as Martin’s young team fell to 12-5 (6-4 league). The Wolverines are due to have their “Senior Night” home league game with Burley today, Friday at 3:30 p.m.
