Twin Falls rodeo tests cowgirls, ‘pokes

Shoshone is next

Carey Rodeo Club’s Matt Whitworth and Kylie Castle made headway in the standings of the 5th District high school rodeo during last weekend’s stop at the College of Southern Idaho, Twin Falls.

Whitworth earned 23 points at CSI including a pair of fourth-place team roping results at 23.44 and 13.24 seconds with partner Cole Millican of Gooding. Nine of Whitworth’s points came in calf roping with sixth and seventh places, at 17.51 and 21.42 seconds.

The Carey junior currently stands sixth in the overall standings with 31 points behind top-three leaders Cody Ruby of Valley (73 including 30 saddle bronc), Wyatt Williams of Gooding (64 with 38 team roping) and Brody Smith of Valley (47, 20 in bareback).

Kylie Castle, another Carey junior, added 20 points at CSI to rise into 10th with 35 points. Tied atop girls’ overall are Marlee Mussmann of Valley (100 points, 28 in pole bending) and Gooding’s Cassie Bahe (100 points, 34 in breakaway roping and 32 goat tying).

Goat tying was Kylie Castle’s strength at CSI with two fifth places in 11.01 and 11.09 seconds for 12 points.

Whitnee Hurless of Fairfield added 16.5 points to her total at the CSI event topped by her sixth-place barrel racing tie in Saturday’s second go (16.036 seconds) and a seventh place Friday (16.475).

Carey’s Kali Castle did well in breakaway roping—placing fourth Friday in 5.9 seconds and seventh Saturday with a 5.830-second time.

Narrowly missing the points in barrel racing was Sarah Rau of the Wood River Rodeo Club with 16.341- and 16.796-second times. Also competing from this area were Adriane McGuire, Etta Seaman and Leah Stewart of Fairfield, and Tayler Bosch of the Wood River club.

It was the second of six weekend rodeos leading to State High School Rodeo finals June 8-14 at Bannock County Fairgrounds, Pocatello. Next is a rodeo stop at Shoshone Friday and Saturday, April 25-26.

First cow cutting of the season was April 9 at Jim Schaeffer’s in Paul. Among the competitors were two from Wood River Rodeo Club, Kendra Price and Bosch.

Price earned 16 points for the evening with 67-point and 65-point rides. Bosch had a pair of 60-point efforts. The leader after the first cutting was Jacee Lancaster of Valley with 20 points on rides of 72 and 71 points. In second place was Jessica Anderson of Gooding, 18 points with rides of 70 and 69 points.

Luke Buck of Richfield (19 points) topped boys’ cutting.

A previous Express rodeo report should have stated that Jerome’s Sonora Birnie was last year’s female top rookie on the circuit.
