Women pony up for good causes

10 organizations benefit from annual grant program

    The Wood River Women’s Charitable Foundation has announced that it will award grants of $5,000 to $25,000 to 10 nonprofit organizations this year.  
    More than 50 of the organization’s members were engaged in a thorough vetting process over the past six months, culminating in presentations by the finalists to the membership. The more than 200 group members then voted, determining the grantees for 2014.
    Those awarded 2014 grants will be:
-    The Advocates’ Every Teen has a Choice and Green Dot Summit. The teen leadership program will get $20,000 to designate peer counselors, advising teens how to intervene in potentially abusive situations.
-    Bellevue Public Library’s Plan, Learn, Reflect, Take Action program received $25,000 for expansion and staff support.
-    Blaine County Drug Coalition’s B.R.A.V.E.-Balance, Responsibility, Activities, Vitality and Enlightenment will get $12,500 for at-risk youth to attend programs that focus on their interests and needs.
-    Crisis Hotline, for its Teen Suicide Awareness School Curriculum Program will receive $12,500 for developing and providing a classroom program on recognizing suicide-warning signs.  
-    Lee Pesky Center/Head Start, for Early Childhood Education Parent Outreach. It will get $25,000 to provide training, materials and support to low-income families to engage their children in readiness skills for kindergarten.
-    NAMI-National Alliance on Mental Illness will get  $18,500 to support training of 25 new teachers/facilitators for their four main signature programs.
-    Senior Connection/Swiftsure Ranch’s Alzheimer’s Education for Therapeutic Riding Instructors at Swiftsure will use $8,000 to provide training that will allow a safe experience for Alzheimer’s participants.
-    Swiftsure Therapeutic Equestrian Center’s Ranch Hand Program will receive $25,000 to teach leadership and self-reliance to at-risk youth through a nine-week summer program of horsemanship, ranch work projects, teamwork and classroom therapies.
-    Wood River Community YMCA’s Make a Splash program will get $5,000 to teach children to be water safe by the end of third grade.
-    WOW–Wood River Foundation’s Student Generosity Initiative will receive $10,000 to contribute to aid students in K-12 to research, interview and select a nonprofit project and support it with $25 per student funding. The students also devote community service hours to their projects.
    This is foundation’s ninth year of awarding grants to Blaine County nonprofits. Through pooled giving, it has awarded more than $1 million in grants to support the work of local nonprofit organizations.
    Formal recognition will be given at the Wood River Women’s Charitable Foundation annual meeting on July 31.
