On a breezy Tuesday in Hailey, the Wood River High School tennis team polished off Minico’s Spartans 9-3 in a Great Basin Conference dual meet

Wood River coach Carlos Meza said, “For the second time this season, the Wolverines fielded a full team and the difference this made for the strength of the team was reflected in the final score.”

The Hailey girls beat Minico 4-2 and the Wolverine boys took care of Minico 5-1, which accounted for the 9-3 final.

Meza said, “Our lineup featured several solid number one position players.”

Indeed, Wood River won four of its No. 1 matches in straight sets, yielding only five of 53 games played in those clashes.

No. 1 doubles winners were Samantha Taylor and Alex Taylor in the girls, Andrew Pearson and Haley Cutler in mixed, and Stephen Pfeiffer-Andrew Graves in boys. No. 1 boys’ singles Danny Graves came out on top 6-0, 6-1.

Meza said, “Danny Graves continues to look very solid at No. 1 boys’ singles. He is the most consistent and strongest player among the boys and he maintains a high level of play. His focus is impressive.”

The coach added, “The rest of the singles players did the team proud—Drew Morse and Oskar Wilander winning in No. 2-No. 3 boys, and Tate Morell and Josie Potts walking away with wins in No. 2-No. 3 girls.”

No. 2 mixed doubles Clay Cutler and Manuela Cortina-Otero continued to improve winning 6-2, 6-2.

Wood River goes to the Eastern Idaho Invitational Friday.

The Community School Cutthroats return from spring trips to host Sugar-Salem and Gooding Tuesday, April 22 at 1 p.m. at Sun Valley Tennis Club, and will play Wood River in Hailey Wednesday, April 23.
