The speedy and field-strong Hagerman Pirates ran away with the boys’ and girls’ titles of Wednesday’s Northside Conference track and field meet on the ISDB oval in Gooding.

Fourth at State 1A track last year, Hagerman’s boys (161 points) won the 11-school boys meet by 80 points with totals of 42 points in sprints, 34 distances, 36 relays and 49 in the field.

Meanwhile, the well-balanced Pirate girls (137 points) prevailed by 42 points in the girls’ race with 11 in the sprints, 39 distances, 23 hurdles, 33 relays and 32 in field.

But the Carey High School girls and boys broke up Hagerman’s dominance in the relays by winning a total of three relays during the gathering of 1A schools from throughout southern Idaho.

Carey won the 4x100-meter (56.50 seconds) and 4x200m (2:00.50) relays by healthy margins with Daphne Kirkland, Clarissa Kirkland, Arriana Nielson and Kelsey Barker in the one-lap race, and Daphne Kirkland, Nielson, Medin Cenarrusa and Barker in 4x2.

In addition, sophomore Clarissa Kirkland won long jump (14-2) and helped the Panthers girls place third of 10 schools with 93.5 points, just behind Hansen (95). Carey also earned second places in the 4x400m and sprint medley relays, and seconds from Cenarrusa in both hurdle events.

The Carey boys prevented a Hagerman relay sweep by taking the 4x400m (4:02.00) with Christian Zarate, Tori Alvarez, Joe Parke and Collin Whitby. Parke, a sophomore, tied for first in high jump at 5-8 with three other boys.

Second places for the Carey boys came from junior Matt Whitworth in discus (121-8) along with the 4x100m, 4x200m and sprint medley relays. The Carey boys (78 points) had a good day to finish third, right behind Castleford (79).

Junior Isaac Simon and senior Taylor Gorringe led the point parade for the Camas County track teams.

The Musher girls (61 points, 5th place) piled up 55 points in the field and the Camas boys (33.25, 9th place) gained most of their points in field.

Gorringe won discus (110-1) by 10 feet and placed second in shotput (32-8). Simon captured the triple jump (39-2.75) by three feet and shared first place in high jump (5-8).

Camas also got a second place in discus from freshman Ariel Reedy (100-1).

Next up: The Carey Invitational track and field meet Thursday, April 24 at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.
