Board selects finalists for superintendent

Public invited to meet candidates at Tuesday special meeting

     The Blaine County School District announced Thursday that two education professionals have been selected as finalists for district superintendent, a post that has been vacant since former Superintendent Lonnie Barber’s contract was terminated in September 2013.

     The finalists—selected by the district board of trustees following closed executive sessions this week—are Richard Canfield, superintendent of schools for Sandwich Public Schools in Cape Cod, Mass., and GwenCarol Holmes, chief academic officer of Alexandria Public Schools in Alexandria, Va. Both Canfield and Holmes have doctorate degrees.

     The community will have the opportunity to meet the two finalists at a special public meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Distance Learning Lab at Wood River High School on Fox Acres Road in Hailey.

     The meeting will be moderated by Ray and Associates, the executive search firm hired by the district for a nationwide search for a Barber replacement. The meeting will consist of candidate introductions and questions and answers. The public will be allowed to submit questions for the candidates either at the meeting prior to its start or at the district website, at www.blaineschools.org. The public can also provide comments on the candidates on a feedback form available at the meeting.

     According to a district news release, both Canfield and Holmes have connections to Blaine County. The district reported that Canfield and his wife own a home in Blaine County and have vacationed here since 1992. The district further reported that Holmes first visited Blaine County as a teenager on a backpacking trip and has visited regularly since then.
