Free heelers keep the Hawaiian spirit alive

Fine day for Baldy’s telemark finals

     On a beautiful day, terrific spring spirit on Baldy meshed with some excellent telemark skiers and snowboarders to produce a memorable Hawaiian Nationals of the Sun Valley Telemark Series Saturday.

     The Men’s Telemark Elite winner with the best single run of the day was Neil Persons, 47, a telemark legend around Big Mountain and Whitefish, Mt. Persons made the U.S. Telemark Ski Team in 1995, inspired a bunch of Big Mountain free heelers to follow him.

     Yancy Caldwell and Amber Marsh clocked the fastest runs among snowboarders, while Jen King topped the Women’s Telemark Elite class.

     Team Idaho and Manly Men kept the Tandem Telemark Challenge alive down Warm Springs. Telemark Sport winners were Nicole Pelletier and Peter Vallimaresco.
