New members join ‘Dreamer’ board

Nonprofit organization helps children achieve in school

    The I Have a Dream Foundation of Idaho, located in the Wood River Valley, announced last week the appointment of three new members to the nonprofit organization’s board of directors.
    New board members are part-time resident Leonard Cohen, Blaine County Commissioner Jacob Greenberg and Silver Creek Outfitters owner Terry Ring.
    The mission of the local chapter of the foundation is to “assist children in the Wood River Valley to become productive citizens by helping them complete their high school education and providing financial assistance for advanced learning.”
    Toward that end, the foundation in 2013 selected the entire third-grade class at Woodside Elementary School in south Hailey as its “Dreamers.” As such, the foundation is now assisting the 50 students to achieve academically, with the long-term goal of high school graduation and college attendance. To further the commitment, the foundation has promised each Dreamer a two-year community school scholarship.
    Cohen, Greenberg and Ring join other board members Kenneth Lewis, a businessman and former shipping executive who serves as the organization’s president, Reginald Reeves, an attorney who is chairman of the board, and Al Hackel, a pediatric surgeon who serves as board vice chairman and secretary.
    Other board members are Stephen Schultz, a businessman, Wendy Ruiz, a Head Start employee and Hispanic community activist, and Dolores Vega, Shoshone support group leader for The Advocates.
    Cohen is a gastroenterologist, serves on the board of the Wood River Jewish Community and is a member of the Idaho Secondary Schools Committee for the University of Pennsylvania.
    Greenberg, who has been appointed treasurer for the foundation, serves as vice chairman on the Blaine County Board of Commissioners and, along with his wife, owns Shorty’s Diner in Hailey. He also sits on the boards of the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority, Fly Sun Valley Alliance, Sun Valley Economic Development and the Blaine County Emergency Preparedness Committee.
    Ring is past chairman of the Idaho Nature Conservancy, having served on the board for 20 years. He is also on the St. Luke’s Health System Western Regional Board of Directors and St. Luke’s Wood River Community Board.
