County requests drought declaration

The Blaine County commissioners this week asked the Idaho Department of Water Resources to declare a drought emergency declaration for Blaine County.

According to snow survey data from the Natural Resources Conservation Council, snow-water equivalent in the Big Wood Basin on April 10 was 92 percent of normal and in the Little Wood Basin was 71 percent of normal.

A drought declaration allows irrigators to temporarily transfer water rights with each other.

The county has obtained drought declarations in seven of the past 10 years, including last year.

In a letter to IDWR Director Gary Spackman, the commissioners stated that the water level in Magic Reservoir is “extremely low” and water shutoff is expected by mid-summer.

“This undoubtedly will result in early downstream calls, negatively affecting both Silver Creek/LWR and BWR irrigators,” the commissioners stated.

Pat Cooley joins airport board

New Friedman Memorial Airport Authority board member Pat Cooley was sworn in at the start of a board meeting Tuesday.

Cooley, a Hailey City Council member, replaced former Hailey Mayor and Councilwoman Susan McBryant, who resigned last month.

“I’m so excited to have Pat Cooley sitting here,” McBryant said. “He’s going to bring a breath of fresh air.”

Airport Manager Rick Baird and Board Chair Ron Fairfax praised McBryant’s 15 years of service on the board.

“No board member over the years has done a better job of looking out for the people she served than you have,” Baird said.

“We will miss your insight, your discussion and your level-headedness,” Fairfax said. “It’s been a pleasure and an honor to have you on the board.”

The seven-member board has three Hailey representatives, three Blaine County representatives and one member representing private pilots. The county and the city of Hailey are co-owners of the airport.

Mountain still set to close April 20

Sun Valley Co. has scaled back its operating chairlifts on Bald Mountain as its April 20 closing date approaches.

Baldy’s four lifts still in operation are Challenger, Greyhawk, Christmas and Lookout Express. Christmas and Lookout Express will cease operations on Sunday, April 13. The Challenger and Christmas lifts will remain open April 14 through April 20, serving the Warm Springs side of the mountain.

Dollar Mountain and the Sun Valley Nordic Center are now closed.
