Baseball team wins 2-1 duel over ‘Hawks

GBC league success

Showing that Monday’s Great Basin Conference league home victory over the Minico Spartans wasn’t a fluke, the Wood River High School baseball team (5-6, 2-5 league) posted another league win Wednesday on the road in Twin Falls.

Wolverine newcomer Tyler Price won a pitcher’s duel with Canyon Ridge ace fireballer Tyler Rosas and Wood River escaped with a 2-1 GBC road win over the Riverhawks.

It was Wood River’s first Great Basin road win in 57 league games dating back four seasons to a 12-6 victory at Burley in 2010 at the league tourney. Rosas, Canyon’s Ridge’s top pitcher, had beaten this year’s Burley squad 11-6 last weekend with a complete game and double-digit strikeouts.

Price (72 pitches, 3 hits, 3 HBP, 2 BB, 4 K) yielded one run on three hits in the first two innings and then settled down. He held the ‘Hawks scoreless for the next four frames of a six-inning stint. Cameron Benson relieved in the seventh and picked off a ‘Hawks runner at first for the final out.

Rosas whiffed eight Wolverines Wednesday but walked four, and two of those walks turned into Hailey runs. Benson walked to lead off the second and scored on an error. Adrian Rojas walked with one out in the fourth and scored. Dylan Broman had two of the three Wood River hits, and Reide Whitehead had the other.

Wood River hosted Canyon Ridge Thursday for a league doubleheader at Hailey’s Founders Field, and entertains Kimberly for a non-conference twinbill Tuesday at 3 p.m.
