‘Hawks shut down WRHS softball bats 4-0

Tight Great Basin game in Hailey

Wood River High School softball players couldn’t solve the pitching of Canyon Ridge sophomore Kayler Detmer in Tuesday’s Great Basin Conference game at Hailey’s South Valley Sports Complex field.

And Detmer’s hitting proved the difference, too.

Detmer, an All-Conference infielder for Canyon Ridge’s senior-laden state tournament team last spring, tossed a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and just two walks as the Riverhawks went home to Twin Falls with a 4-0 triumph.

Nearly as good was Wood River pitcher Brittney Bradley.

Junior Bradley (3-3) gave up only one earned run—a leadoff homer by Detmer in the fourth giving Canyon Ridge a 1-0 lead. Bradley (110 pitches, 7 hits, 2 walks, 5 K) and Detmer (105 pitches, 3 hits, 2 walks, 14 K) had nearly identical stats except for the whiff discrepancy.

Detmer, whose two-out, two-run single stretched the ‘Hawks lead from 2-0 to 4-0 in the seventh, baffled the Wolverine hitters in the circle and got better as the game progressed.

She sprinkled around the three Hailey hits—a one-out single by Blair Radford in the first, a one-out single by Lacy Harrington in the fifth and a leadoff bunt single by Ashley Hicks in the sixth. Hicks made it all the way to third with two stolen bases, but Detmer reached back and struck out the 2-3-4 Wood River hitters.

Wood River (5-4, 3-3 league) visits the ‘Hawks for a GBC doubleheader on April 29.

Coach Dale Martin’s team goes to the Kimberly tournament today, Friday and Saturday. The Wolverines play Teton of Driggs today at 1 p.m. and South Fremont of St. Anthony at 5 p.m. Saturday, the Wolverines meet Shelley at noon and Buhl at 2 p.m. to finish play.
