Ketchum adopts telecom standards

City to follow practices as upgrades made

By ERIC AVISSAR

The Ketchum City Council unanimously approved on Monday the adoption of the international standards and practices for design and construction of telecommunications, enacting a standard for best practices and standards for technological services.

Technical Planner and Designer Sean Tajkowski delivered a presentation in which he said the lack of regulation in the telecommunications industry made adoption of the document imperative.

“We have to have a document like this because there is no real governing body in telecommunications, just standards,” Tajkowski said. “The labeling of telecommunication products and pathways are not regulated, and many facilities have no labeling for their products.”

In an overview of the manual on wireless communications, Tajkowski said the document provides guidance complying with methods, materials and standards of the universal telecommunications industry. The manual is filled with technical terms.

While members of the City Council said they had difficulty understanding the manual of standards and practices, Tajkowski said the document is most important for the companies that offer telecommunication services, including broadband Internet. He also said the standards are extremely important in terms of public safety, because communications and technology play such an important role in the responses of the Fire Department and emergency medical services.

Mayor Nina Jonas said she hopes the adoption of the manual will encourage local businesses to raise their standards of best practices to install and use telecommunication devices.

The manual will be used to guide construction and implementation of Ketchum’s on-demand audio and video streaming of City Council meetings. The system is expected to become operational in May.
