Janss Pro-Am pumps it up for SVSEF

Over 200 volunteers and 156 skiers on 26 six-member teams enjoyed the 17th annual Janss Pro-Am Classic fundraiser for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Thursday through Saturday at Sun Valley Resort.

Not only did they enjoy the three-day skiing and social event, they remembered SVSEF and Janss Classic boosters who died last year, including 57-year-old Rufus M. Brown. He passed away June 3 of cancer in his native Louisiana.

SVSEF honorary board member Chelle Gourlay said about Brown’s death during Saturday’s awards banquet in the Sun Valley Inn Limelight Room, “A huge bright light went out in our community.

“Rufus and (his wife) Liz became the definition of the spirit of the Janss. They would stay in character the whole weekend. My personal favorite memory of Rufus was when he skied down the course as Dean Martin with a full martini in his hand, not spilling a drop. His spirit is here. The Janss embodied his principles—get involved, give back and thank every person involved.”

Two years ago at the Janss Classic, the Browns pledged a donation of over $200,000 to the SVSEF Endowment Fund over a 10-year period.
