Heavenly sounds for your soul

Caritas Choir brings divine music

    Between “The Bible” series, the films, “Son of God,” and “Noah,” there has been a lot of focus on Jesus this year. But Easter is his season.
   The Caritas Chorale is bringing “Messiah,” by George Frideric Handel, to the valley this weekend, 272 years to the day from its first performance in Dublin, Ireland.
   The public is invited to enjoy the classical concert on Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum.
   The Chorale will sing parts II and III, the Easter portion, which is only slightly less well known than the Christmas portion of “Messiah.”
   Maestro Dick Brown will conduct what will be his last major classical concert as artistic director of the Caritas Chorale.
   In a news release from the organization, Brown said he selected this piece for his exit because he has had a long history with it throughout his career as a cello player, orchestra conductor, choral director and teacher.
   “I always learn something different about the work every time I direct it,” Brown said.
   “Messiah” is described as music with universal appeal to audiences of all kinds. Its dramatic arias and choruses showcase Handel’s famed operatic styles and yet transcends the parameters of music taste.
   For the singers, it is music that is fun to sing and challenging to perform.
   Among the solo arias to be sung are, “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” by a soprano, “Behold, I tell you a mystery,” and “The trumpet shall sound,” by a solo bass.
   There will be grand choruses with quick Baroque tempos, including “All we, like sheep, have gone astray” and “The Lord gave the Word,” lead to the favorite magisterial “Hallelujah” chorus and the final triumphant “Amen.”
   In addition to the 60-voice Chorale, the Handel work will feature four professional soloists: Betsy Uschkrat, soprano; Louisa Waycott, mezzo-soprano; Tyler Smith, tenor; and James Martin, bass.
   The chorale and soloists will be accompanied by a 28-member professional orchestra, many of whom are regulars with the Boise Philharmonic.
   Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
