Weisel climbs on DH leaderboard at Aspen

     U.S. Ski Team hopeful Kipling Weisel, 19, of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation kept his late-season momentum going Wednesday with another solid result, this one at Aspen Highlands, Co.

     Weisel was right up there with USST heavyweights in a field of 49 starters and 37 two-run finishers. He scored 27.57 FIS points finishing sixth in the Surefoot Ski Club Championship men’s two-run downhill at Aspen, Colorado.

     Leading the U-21 contingent, Weisel was only 1.68 seconds behind winner Steven Nyman, 32, of Utah. Nyman, a two-time Olympian who has a pair of World Cup downhill wins at Val Gardena, Italy on his ledger during a World Cup career dating back to 2006, finished 27th in the 2014 Olympic downhill.

     Next best Wednesday at Aspen was Travis Ganong, the fastest American finisher with a fifth place in the Sochi Olympic downhill. Weisel was sixth, SVSEF Gold Teamer Tanner Farrow 10th and SVSEF’s Tanner Josey 26th.

     Weisel was consistent in all disciplines during the Western Region FIS Spring Series March 26-31 on Baldy. Finishing six races, he improved each day—10-SG and 5-SG (21st and 13th overall), 2-GS and 3-GS (10th and 9th), and 2-SL and 1-SL (5th and 7th overall).
