Vipers to play Flounders in B+ Hockey final

Hutch Cup finale set for Sun-day, April 6


     The seventh annual Hutch Cup B+ Hockey League tournament championship will be settled Sunday, April 6 with a 7:45 p.m. meeting between No. 6-seeded Sun Valley Auto Club/Vipers (6-9-2) and No. 2-seeded Flounders (9-6-1).

     Led by four goals by Travis Kilmer including the winner, Auto Club/Vipers earned a berth in next Sunday’s championship game with a 4-3 overtime triumph over No. 4 Lampl’s Garage (7-10-0) at Sun Valley Skating Center.

     Jim Laski, Dan Gralenski and Bill Sprong assisted on Kilmer’s goals. Lampl’s goal scorers were Chris Peterson, January Root and Clark Shafer, with Todd Avison recording three assists during the Sunday night clash at Sun Valley Skating Center.

     Lampl’s Garage will assemble one more time when it plays in next Sunday’s B+ consolation game at 6:30 p.m. against No. 1-seeded Hutch’s Bad Dogs (11-4-2) on resort ice.

     Hutch’s Bad Dogs stayed alive Sunday night with a 5-2 victory that eliminated No. 3-seeded Aardvarks (9-8-1).

     Alex Baron notched a three-goal hat trick including an open-netter for Hutch’s Bad Dogs. Providing singles goals for the winners were Shannon Flavin and Dave McCormack. Assisting were Baba Street and Ed Grimes.

     For Aardvarks, Nic Thomas scored two goals and Rod Watson helped with two assists.

     Earlier Sunday evening in the first B+ tourney game, Aardvarks ousted the No. 5 Sharks (5-10-2) by a score of 6-3.

     Five Aardvarks scored—Rod Watson (2 goals/0 assists), Wendy Speth (1/1), Dan Gorham (1/1), Eric Wingard (1/1) and Crugar Thomas (1/0). Assisting were Chris Corwin and Bryan Furlong.

     Sharks scorers were Ken Pratt (2/0) and Shaun Kelly (1/1), assisted by Alan Dupuis and Sean Murphy.

     The start of the four-team B League tournament will also happen next Sunday, April 6, with Wild playing Blues at 4 p.m. and Flyers facing off with Racers at 5:15 p.m.

     Last year’s B+ League tournament champion was Rockets 4-3 in overtime over 2012 winner Aardvarks. Flounders captured the B+ consolation title 4-2 over Hutch’s Bad Dogs. The B League champion was Racers 4-3 over Wild.

     The tournament is named for the late Mark Hutchison, a longtime recreational hockey player here.
