Janss Pro-Am April 3-5 in final planning stages

Major SVSEF fundraiser is next week

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) is in the final planning stages for its 17th annual Janss Pro-Am Classic fundraiser. Hundreds of ski and snowboard enthusiasts will attend. Team registration is still available.

Once again, the title sponsor is investment bank Stifel Nicolaus Weisel for the three-day celebration of skiing and snowboarding Thursday through Saturday, April 3-5 at the Sun Valley Resort.

A primary SVSEF fundraiser, the Janss Pro Am provides one-third of the organization’s operating budget and is the largest contributor to the SVSEF financial aid program.

The event is named for the late Bill Janss, former owner of Sun Valley Resort, Olympian, SVSEF supporter, and an enthusiastic ski and costume party enthusiast.

Theme for 2014 is “Dance, Dance Evolution. Each team chooses a “decade of dance” theme and costumes are encouraged.

Participants take part as a corporate team sponsor, team sponsor, individual racer or guest with a social pass. In addition, you can attend just the awards fete and dance.

Ski and snowboard participants will race dual giant slalom with ski professionals and former Olympians, Pro Tour and World Cup racers. The Pro-Am teams consist of four amateurs and two professionals.

This year’s Janss pros include Langely McNeal, Zach Crist, Jilyne Higgins, Libby Ludlow, Kyle Wieche and David Chodounsky.

Each team is assigned “Junior Pro,” which is a current athlete selected from the SVSEF ski and snowboard teams. All abilities are encouraged. Racers are handicapped so that everyone has a fair chance to win and of course to have fun.

Highlights include a traditional “Pro Welcome Party” at The Olympic Bar in Michel’s Christiania restaurant in Ketchum on Thursday, April 3; the American Harvest après ski party at Whiskey Jacques in Ketchum on Friday, April 4; hosted breakfasts and lunches; and the gala awards banquet in the Sun Valley Inn’s Limelight Room on the evening of Saturday, April 5.

For more information visit svsef.org or register with Sarah Crowley at sarah@svsef.org. You can call her at 726-4129 ext. 111.

In the past year, the SVSEF has been designated as an official Olympic Nordic training site and has also received the awards of U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association 2013 Club of the Year and USSA 2013 Snowboard Club of the Year.

Volunteers still needed to help with Janss Pro-Am

Volunteers are such an important part of the success of the Janss Pro-Am that the event assigns former SVSEF Nordic racer Alexa Turzian to organize and assign volunteers.

Turzian said Wednesday, “We have nearly 200 volunteer shifts to cover and are still looking for help to pull this off. And thanks to all who have already signed up to help out.”

Opportunities include banner organization, tent décor and tent banners, and prize wrapping in the week prior to the event; bib handout and race course ambassadors on Friday and Saturday of the Pro-Am; help with Friday’s après ski party; course crew and race starter at the Saturday race finale; and acting as cashier at the awards banquet.

Email Turzian at aturzian@gmail.com for the latest list of volunteer shift choices.
