Blaine chess team wins at state

Local club regains title after earlier second-place finishes

     BCSD Chess Rage, a team that includes both Wood River High School and Silver Creek High School chess aficionados, came home with a first-place title in last weekend’s Idaho Chess Association State Scholastic High School Championship meet in Boise.

     Team coach Adam Porth, who teaches at both high schools, said that after two consecutive years of second-place finishes, this year’s competition propelled the Rage back into first place.

     “The BCSD Chess Club is the best chess team in the state,” Porth said.

     Porth said the team was led to the title by Desmond Porth, who won first place in the 11th-grade competition, Tyler Avila, who took second place in the 12th-grade division, and Andre Murphy, who placed third in 10th-grade competition.

     “This really was a team effort and I am proud of how each student performed, contributed and helped one another to bring home more hardware than any tournament we have ever been to," said Porth.

     Other notable scores contributing to the title and the hardware accumulation came from Journey Iverson, who placed second in the 11th-grade category, Levi Catangcatang, who took third in the 11th-grade division, and Cooper Dean, who won first place in the ninth-grade division.

     Porth said the team also included Wood River Middle School students and elementary age students. An eighth-grade team comprised of Dylan Porth and Spencer Neel took second place in that division. Other players involved in the tournament were Otto Olson, Quentin Van Law, Darwin Porth, Liam Van Law, Sarah Hattula and Zane Barckholtz.
