Prep track athletes in action at Kimberly, Twin

Meets prior to Spring Break

     Track and field athletes at Hailey’s Wood River High School, Carey High School and Fairfield’s Camas County High School were in competition Thursday and Friday at meets in Kimberly and Twin Falls.

 

Distance runners lift WRHS track at Twin

     Distance runners Janel Passey, Mariah Stout and Kenya Schott piled up 30 points helping the Wood River High School girls’ track and field team capture second place in Friday’s Twin Falls High School quad meet.

     Wood River (67 points) finished behind only the Twin Falls girls (119) in the final standings, with Burley (33) and Kemmerer, Wyo. (29) rounding out the field. Twin Falls (192) dominated the boys. Hailey’s Wolverines (25) were third.

     Passey, a senior, won the 1600m run (5:57.5) and 800m (2:33.3). Another senior, Stout, had personal records in the 800m (2:40.35, 3rd) and 1600m (5:59.46, 2nd) while winning the 3200m (12:11.24) in yet another personal record.

     Schott, a junior, was second in 800m (2:37.96) and second in the 3200m (12:53.60, PR).

     Another junior distance runner, Alexis Gonzalez, earned 14 of his team’s 25 points by winning 3200m (10:42.23) along with posting second places in 800m (2:14.4) and 1600m (5:13).

     Wood River traveled with 24 athletes and showed promise in sprints, jumps and relays.

     Sprinters Brandon Yagla, a senior, and sophomore Michelle Mason posted second-place results—Yagla at 400m (55.9, PR) and Mason at 200m (28.3). Sophomore Sara Lichtenberg earned second places in triple (28-11) and high (4-8) jumps.

     The boys’ 4x400m relay of Dan De La Cruz, Alberto Gonzalez, Kenny Pratt and Yagla raced to second place in 4:26.2. In third was the girls’ 4x400m relay of Amanda Passey, Michelle Casas, Amy Cantrell and Michelle Mason (4:45.07).

     Other Hailey placers:

     · 4ths—Kenny Pratt 300m intermediate hurdles (49.87, PR); Amanda Passey 3200m (13:55); Pilar Pennell high jump (4-2); Brooke Sundholm triple jump (26-6); and Michelle Casas 400m (1:10.04).

     · 5ths—Taylor Douthit shotput (38-7 1/4); Michelle Mason 100m (13.7); and Amy Cantrell 3200m (14:00.3).

     Other personal records for Wood River came from Irvin Gonzalez, Cormac Heneghan and Alek Higley.

 

Carey girls third at Kimberly meet

     The Carey High School Panther girls made a big step upward Thursday during the 11-school Barry Espil Invitational track and field meet at Kimberly High School’s oval.

     Carey (14 points distances, 11 hurdles, 30 relays, 34 field) moved up to third place with 89 points behind only Raft River of Malta (137) and Hagerman (103). Raft River had 36 points in the sprints and 36 in the relays Thursday.

     First-place winners for Carey were senior Daphne Kirkland pole vault (6-0), senior Lilly Rivera long jump (14-8) and freshman McKenley Howard 1600m run (7:33.80). Rivera and soph Hailee Johnson (14-7) placed 1-2 in long jump.

     Sixth-place Camas County of Fairfield (35 points) piled up 31 points in the throws led by senior Taylor Gorringe who won girls’ discus (98-4) and was second in shotput (33-3.75).

     Carey’s second-place girls’ relays were 4x100m (Daphne and Clarissa Kirkland, Arriana Nielson, Kelsey Barker in 57.40), 4x200m (Rivera, Johnson, Medin Cenarrusa, Barker in 2:02.60) and medley (the Kirklands, Cenarrusa, Rivera in 2:06.30).

     In the boys’ division won by Raft River (146.5), Carey’s boys placed seventh with 41.5 points and Camas was ninth (30).

     Carey’s boys had 19 points in the relays and 17.5 in field led by Corban Johnson pole vault (8-6, 3rd) and Matt Whitworth discus (118-1, 3rd). Camas senior Isaac Simon was second in high jump (5-10) and second in triple jump (38-11.25).

     One outstanding athlete was Dietrich senior Jacob Dalton. He swept boys’ distances—winning the 800m by 7.6 seconds, 1600m by 9.20 seconds and 3200m by 26 seconds.
