Give the elk, deer a break

“Give the critters a break,” reads an educational wildlife sign that was recently installed on city of Hailey property in Old Cutters subdivision at the Hangman Gulch Trailhead. The sign warns people that the sagebrush-covered hills east of Hailey provide critical habitat for wild animals. The sign effort was started by county resident Lili Simpson and supported financially by the city ($2,500 in cash and in-lieu materials and labor), the Idaho Department of Fish and Game ($500), and the Bureau of Land Management ($2,500). Shown from left to right are: BLM Recreational Planner John Kurtz, sign designer Evelyn Phillips, who lives near the trailhead, and Hailey Community Development Director Micah Austin. “The sign looks great and hopefully will be the first of many other educational signs to be installed in our valley for the protection of wildlife,” said Austin. Austin said the city is taking donations for a second sign in Old Cutters, and pursuing authorization to install a similar sign at the mouth of Quigley Canyon in the county right of way.
