Hailey vehicle vandalism ends, for now

Police estimate damage at about $13,000

Jeff Gunter

Hailey police received 33 reports of vehicles in the city with damaged windows before a rash of vandalism ended abruptly early last week.
“We haven’t caught anybody, but right now they’ve stopped,” Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said Monday.
The vandalism, which lasted from about Tuesday, March 11, through Monday, March 17, was apparently the result of a person or persons driving by in a motor vehicle and firing at other vehicles’ windows with a BB gun. Typically, only one window per vehicle was shot out. Police reported earlier that the damage occurred at night and throughout the city.
Although the vandalism has stopped for now, police are continuing to investigate.
“We continue to be out in force attempting to catch the person or persons who did this,” Gunter said. “It’s going to be well in excess of a felony amount, probably 13 grand,” said Gunter, estimating total damage.
The police chief renewed a request that the public report anything suspicious or unusual, particularly at night. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Hailey police at 788-3531.
