    Actors Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland played the heroic and slightly unhinged doctors saving and losing lives during the Korean War in the feature film “M*A*S*H,” which was later made into a critically acclaimed and popular television series. The original 1970 American satirical black-comedy feature film directed by Robert Altman will be shown on the big screen by the Magic Lantern Film Society on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. All seats for the rare appearance at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum are $5. The film and series were based around Richard Hooker’s novel “MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors.” “M*A*S*H” is one of the only feature award-winning films that became a franchise and became one of the biggest films of the early 1970s for 20th Century Fox. The film depicts a unit of medical personnel stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) in Korea. It also features actors Tom Skerritt, Elliott Sally Kellerman and Robert Duvall. The film went on to receive five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The film’s only win was for Best Adapted Screenplay. Captains “Hawkeye” Pierce, “Duke” Forrest and “Trapper” John McIntyre, along with Col. Henry Blake, Major Frank Burns and Major Margaret Houlihan, aka “Hot Lips,” were household names after the film. The satire was unapologetically anti-war and bureaucracy and challenged religion.
