Ketchum approves art spending increase

City endorses 5 percent allocation

By JON MENTZER
Express Staff Writer

The Ketchum City Council on Monday unanimously decided to increase from 1.33 percent to 5 percent the portion of money spent on capital improvement projects that is required to go toward local art projects.
The “5 percent for art” will apply to eligible capital improvement projects under $1 million. Under the ordinance, the council will use its discretion in determining how much to spend for art on projects costing more than that.
The city can direct the money either toward artwork on the project itself or toward creating art elsewhere in the city.
Idaho law prohibits the percent-for-art ordinance from applying to utility, water or wastewater projects.
Whatever money doesn’t get used will be donated to an Arts Commission Trust Fund.
The “percent for art” money can also be used to maintain existing art. The Ketchum Arts Commission will make recommendations on how the money will be spent toward maintenance.
“I’m the ultimate authority on the annual budget for the parks and rec,” Parks and Recreation Director Jen Smith said. “Believe me, maintenance is very important to me and I’ll make sure it happens and it’s paid for.”
