     Two more gold medals!

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation members of the Intermountain Division squad picked up two more golds during the 2014 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Junior National Cross-Country Ski Championships at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt.

Displaying its dominance in the U-16 (ages 14-15) boys’ class, Intermountain with SVSEF racers Zach Williams and Peter Wolter plus Max Polito of Jackson Hole captured Saturday’s 3x3-kilometer freestyle relay by three seconds over an Alaskan trio in a 19-team field.

That 70-point victory was vitally important to Intermountain’s final third-place finish in the 10-team Alaska Cup standings that were based on a cumulative total of four events starting on Monday, March 3.

Along with Intermountain’s U-16 girls’ 3x3k skate relay win with Brooke Dunnagan of Bogus Basin, Anna Gibson of Jackson Hole and Leah Lange of Park City, Utah, the Intermountain free relay teams piled up 305 points Saturday and improved to 851 for the week—23 points more than Rocky Mountain.

New England (1,512 points), getting a whopping 660 points from its predominantly college U-20 racers, ran away with the Alaska Cup over Midwest (1,144). New England won each event handily—classic distance, classic sprints, freestyle distance and skate sprints—but Intermountain came closest, only 50 points away in the skate relays.

The other SVSEF gold came from 18-year-old University of Vermont freshman Maggie Williams. She captured Friday’s U-20 (ages 18-19) 10k freestyle race by six seconds in 30:47—best time of 31 finishers.

Sun Valley’s first two golds came March 3, although one, technically, counted in New England’s ledger.

Cole Morgan, 19, of Bozeman, Mt., a former SVSEF racer now racing as a sophomore for the University of Vermont Catamounts, and current SVSEF junior star Zach Williams, 14, won gold in their respective U-20 and U-16 classes in the interval start classic distance races for 377 competitors.

Other notable JN results for Sun Valley included:

Classic sprints March 5: Zach Williams third in U-16 Final A heat and Peter Wolter 12th.

Freestyle distance races March 7: Cole Morgan fourth in U-20 over 15k; former SVSEF racer Laurel Fiddler of Bates College 15th in U-20 over 10k; and Zach Williams and Peter Wolter fifth and sixth in the U-16 race over 5k.

Skate relays March 8: Eli Jensen, Carter Ros and River Vorse sixth of 19 teams in U-16 boys, 59 seconds behind the winning time; and Peter Neal of Jackson Hole, Danny Graves of Sun Valley and Alex Jackson of Park City seventh of 24 teams in U-18 on the 3x3k relay course.
