Students seek to reduce coffee cup trash

Community School group launches ‘Project Green Cup’

    Community School’s Green Team suggests that coffee drinkers bring their own mugs to local coffee shops. The intent of the program, organized as a contest, is to reduce the amount of trash from disposable coffee cups, which the school describes in a press release as “astronomical.”
   According to the press release, five Ketchum coffee shops—Coffee Grinder, Iconoclast Books and Café, Java on Fourth, Starbucks and Velocio—have agreed to help the Green Team make “Project Green Cup” work.
   Here’s how it works: Coffee or tea drinkers bring their own reusable mugs to a participating coffee shop and shop personnel will issue the drinkers a bright green sticker marked “#Greencupsv.” People can then put the sticker on their mug, order a favorite drink and then snap a photograph of the cup in use and post the photo to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag “#greencupsv.”
Community School’s Green Team will choose three winners: a Green Team favorite, one at random and one with the most “likes.” Each winner will receive a gift card to participating coffee shops.
According to the press release, the idea for Project Green Cup originated when the Green Team conducted a semiannual trash survey at the school. They discovered that students were throwing away an enormous number of disposable coffee cups

According to Green Team member Joe Hall, a seventh-grader, encouraging coffee and tea drinkers to use reusable mugs is a “sustainable” solution to the disposable cup trash problem.

   “The group figured that if students were throwing away that many away, the number of cups thrown out valleywide had to be astronomical,” the press release states.

   The contest starts March 10 and runs until May 30. Photos must include the sticker and the hashtag #greencupsv in the Instagram, Facebook or Twitter posting to qualify. Participants can submit more than one photo, but can only win once.
