Some Bellevue residents became concerned when three old cottonwood trees were removed from Bellevue Memorial Park this week, but city leaders and professional arborists decided the trees' rotten limbs had become dangerous to the public.
“The city has been diligently removing, as they can afford, the dying diseased cottonwood trees in Memorial Park for the last few years,” Mayor Chis Koch said.
Koch said city staff were notified of the danger during last year’s Labor Day event of “extremely dangerous” dead tree limbs hanging over the children’s playing area and also near the southwest corner of the park.
The city had professionals remove the immediately.
Parks Chair Craig Wolfrom addressed the City Council last fall and again at a Feb. 10 meeting about the remaining dangers and need for future maintenance.
City Clerk Dee Barton said further information regarding the conversation about Memorial Park tree maintenance would be available when the minutes of the Feb. 10 meeting are approved and posted on March 17.
“The issue of parks maintenance was posted at City Hall on the City Council agenda,” she said. People can attend meetings.”
The council voted to hire Alpine Tree Service to remove the most dangerous trees and perform maintenance work at Memorial Park.
Koch said two trees were removed about five years ago and replanted with other species on the south Elm Street side of the park, along with a row of cottonwoods.
