Accountant wants to serve on school board

Trustees to determine who fills board vacancy

    Kirk Peterson says he applied for a vacancy on the Blaine County School District Board of trustees because the board could use his expertise.
   Peterson, 59, is an accountant.
   “I’m going to be learning quite a bit, but I believe I can give a little more to the board regarding the financial side of things, because I think they’ve been lacking in that,” Peterson said in an interview Monday.
   Peterson was the only applicant who filed by the Feb. 26 deadline to fill the trustee Zone 4 position that was vacated in January with the resignation of former board Chairman Paul Bates. Whether he is chosen for the trustee position is up to the school board, which will interview Peterson for the post at a special meeting on Monday.
   Peterson has lived in the Wood River Valley for almost 27 years, having moved here in 1987. He currently lives in the mid-valley. He and his wife have raised four children, all of whom attended school in the district.
   “My oldest is 33 and my youngest is 19,” he said. “So I’ve got no one left in the school system.”
   Peterson said he decided to apply for the trustee position because of the urging and support of several acquaintances.
   “I was urged by friends because of my financial background,” he said. “I’m getting messages from a lot of different people. I’ve gotten some very positive feedback. I’m fairly surprised by it.”
   Peterson said he has no prior experience in holding public office.
   “It’s a new arena for me to jump into,” he said.

Meeting rescheduled
The Blaine County School District announced on Friday that a special meeting originally set for today, March 5, has now been rescheduled to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 10. The purpose of the meeting is to interview the applicant for the board of trustees Zone 4 vacancy, created by the resignation of former board Chairman Paul Bates in January. The meeting will be held at the district office at 118 West Bullion St. in Hailey.
