Ketchum forms energy advisory committee

Group to advise City Council on energy efficiency

By ERIC AVISSAR
Express Staff Writer

The city of Ketchum has created an energy advisory committee to help it reach decisions on a variety of energy issues.
The dozen-member group was unanimously approved during a council meeting Feb. 18.
In a staff report, Planning Manager Joyce Allgaier stated that the creation of the committee represents a significant step in moving the community toward greater sustainability, energy independence and reduction of the city’s carbon footprint.
“This is a great step forward for the city of Ketchum,” Allgaier said during the meeting. “It puts the importance of energy security on our radar. The comprehensive plan also reinforces being greener and using more alternative energy, which is what this group wants to help bring to the city in the future.”
Allgaier stated in the report that the 12 people originally met out of concern about Idaho Power’s proposed redundant power line to Ketchum following a city work session in August 2013. She said it convened to learn more about the project, share information and evaluate and discuss options for the region.
“After the group came together several times, it realized that its interests reached beyond the power line to areas of greater general interest and impact, including the value that the community places on the use of renewable energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency,” she stated.
    The committee includes:

  • Aimee Christensen, founder and CEO of Christensen Global Strategies.
  • Paul Conrad, co-founder of Site Based Energy.
  • Steve Cook, architect and member of the Ketchum Planning and Zoning Commission.
  • Molly Goodyear, executive director of the Environmental Resource Center.
  • Wendolyn Holland, consultant to early-stage energy companies, formerly with U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Dean Holter, CFO and general counsel of Christensen Global Strategies
  • Rick LeFaivre, investor, former senior executive at Apple.
  • Bill Mann, owner of Sagebrush Solar.
  • Kerrin McCall, writer, artist and environmental advocate.
  • Alan Richardson, former president and CEO of the American Public Power Association.
  • Mariel Platt, Hailey sustainability coordinator.
  • Josh Solly, co-founder of Ketchum Energy Co.

Allgaier will serve as the liaison between the committee and the City Council. She said Mayor Nina Jonas wanted this committee to be formed officially so it can advise the council on pressing energy matters.
The next step for the committee is to create and ratify a set of bylaws, which will include provisions such as its future meeting schedule.
