Silvers for Bantams, U-14 girls at state hockey

IAHA tourney in Idaho Falls


     Sun Valley Youth Hockey Bantams (ages 13-14) and Girls U-14 teams had impressive second-place finishes during Idaho Amateur Hockey Association (IAHA) state tournaments staged Feb. 21-23 at Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena in Idaho Falls.

     The U-14 girls, the youngest team to ever play in the state U-19 girls’ state competition, showed promise for the future by competing well in the four-team division.

     Sun Valley’s girls qualified for the final by tying McCall 1-1 and beating Salmon 5-0. They also suffered a 2-1 loss to Idaho Falls 1-2. In the final, the girls lost 4-0 to the Idaho Falls Eagles, a team that outscored its four opponents 17-3.

     For Sun Valley, goalie Evi Johnson had 61 saves in net.

     Weekend scoring for the U-14 girls: Anik Zarkos 2 goals/2 assists; Audra Mary 2/1; Abigail Benson 0/2; Daisy Buxton 1/0; Denali Stevens 1/0; Kasey Johnson 0/1; Megan Johnston 1/0; Sophie Nasvik 0/1; and Sydney Roberts 0/1. Also attending were Morgan Benson and Taylor Hebert.

     Games pucks went to Sydney Roberts, Anik Zarkos, Daisy Buxton and, for the championship game, to the entire team.

     The Sun Valley Bantams wrapped up a 17-15-1 winter campaign by placing second to Boise in the Bantam A division at state. The Bantams Suns won 12-1 over Idaho Falls and defeated the Boise Steelheads 4-3 before falling to Boise 5-1 in the final.

     Bantams head coach John Stevens said, “Tremendous improvement from the players this year.” The assistant coaches were Chad Levitan and Bryan O’Connell. Team manager was Matt Buxton.

     The state tournament featured 24 games over three days in five divisions. Boise Hawks won the Bantam B division.

     Boise Junior Steelheads routed Idaho Falls 8-2 for the Midget A championship, and Treasure Valley blanked Coeur d’Alene 4-0 for the Midget B state crown.

 

Squirts unbeaten at Jackson Hole

     The SVYH Squirts (ages 9-10) went 3-0-1 during a Jackson Hole (Wyo.) tournament over the Presidents’ Day holiday but missed out on a championship game berth on the goals-against tiebreaker.

     Sun Valley tied Park City (Utah) 5-5, and won three games 3-2, 7-0 and 15-2 over Jackson Hole Red, Idaho Falls Gold and the Utah Grizz.

     Squirts weekend scorers were: Deke Burrell (9 goals/1 assist), Zack Benson (3/6), Slater Whitehead (3/3), Jake Nikolaisons (3/1), Wilson Webster (3/0), Colby Speth (2/4), Ashton Tanner (2/0), Alex Lengyel (2/2), Finn Naghsh (1/1), Sebastian Buxton(1/1), Oliver Wiedemann (1/0), Taylor Nelson (0/2), Max Jenson (0/1),  Clayton Elsbree (0/1) and Jessie Burks (0/1).
