Suns back in action with Bozeman Stingers

Four games left in 2013-14 season

Coming off one of its best wins of the season, the Sun Valley Suns senior men’s hockey team is in action today, Friday, Feb. 28 with the first of a two-game series against the Bozeman (Mt.) Stingers.

Opening faceoff is 7 p.m. today. The series wraps up Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. The benefit is for the Sawtooth United Football Club (SUFC) youth soccer program.

The Sun Valley (6-8-0) skaters have won three of their last four games including a solid 9-2 triumph over the Michigan Sting Feb. 15 in the Idaho team’s last outing prior to the Presidents’ Day holiday.

Suns coach John Burke said the Bozeman has an up-and-coming senior men’s team that is run by former Suns skater Justin Cook. He said the Stingers are planning to bring a full squad of 18 skaters and a goaltender for the series.

“Bozeman lost two close games to Jackson Hole this season,” said Burke, referring to 4-3 and 4-1 Jackson Hole Moose wins over the Stingers at Snow King Center in Wyoming Dec. 27-28.

The Stingers also visited Sun Valley last March and dropped 4-2 and 5-4 games that closed the Suns campaign with an 11-11 record.

Coach Burke expects to have Boise’s Marty Flichel (2 goals, 8 assists in 6 games) and Sun Valley Youth Hockey alumni Drew Punnett back skating for the Suns.

After Bozeman’s visit, the Suns take another weekend off and wrap up their 18-game winter season by hosting the Park City (Utah) Pioneers on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 on resort ice. Higher Ground will be the benefit for the final series of the season.

Burke added that it’s unlikely that the canceled Feb. 21-22 home series with the First Class men’s team from British Columbia, Canada will be made up March 21-22, as the coach had previously hoped.
