Dietrich, Carey play for Northside title

Boys’ hoops tourney in Gooding

The eight-school Northside Conference boys’ varsity basketball tournament narrowed down to its Final Four this week and those were the top four seeds—defending champion Dietrich, No. 2 Carey, No. 4 Castleford and No. 3 Richfield.

Dietrich (19-3) took its high-powered offense up against the Carey Panthers (13-9) Thursday in the district championship game at Gooding High. The two teams also clashed in last year’s final, Dietrich winning 58-49.

The winner of Dietrich-Carey automatically qualified for the State 1A Division 2 tournament March 6-8 in Caldwell. The Dietrich-Carey loser plays again today, Friday at 7 p.m. at Gooding against the winner of Thursday’s loser-out game between Richfield (12-11) and Castleford (9-12).

And tonight’s winner will secure the other Northside berth to next week’s eight-school state tournament.

Carey won its semi-final 58-37 over Richfield Tuesday as sophomore Joe Parke (20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks) and junior Matt Whitworth (13 points, 10 boards, 3 assists) had big games for the Panthers (45% field goal shooting).

Coach Dick Simpson’s Panthers had 15 blocked shots and Richfield struggled with 30% field goal shooting and 33 turnovers. Carey contributors included Nate Adamson (9 points, 4 assists, 2 steals), Collin Whitby (6 points, 4 assists, 4 steals), Luis Garcia (3 points, 6 blocks, 2 steals), Chris Peck (4 points, 3 assists) and Toby Whitworth (2 points).

In Tuesday’s other semi-final, Dietrich raced past Castleford 96-55.

Over in the consolation bracket Tuesday, Lighthouse Christian won 63-42 over No. 8 Camas County and Murtaugh ended the Community School’s season 57-46. On Wednesday, Castleford ousted Murtaugh 55-49 and Richfield slipped past Lighthouse Christian 38-36.
