Rotarun open for night skiing

Snow Box Derby race canceled

After dusk several nights each week there is a light shining out west of Hailey in Croy Canyon.

It is the glow of night skiing offered at Rotarun Ski area, the second oldest ski area in the Wood River Valley. Rotarun is located four miles west of Hailey in Croy Canyon.

“We opened the middle of January, but it was only half the mountain,” said mountain manager Larry Smith.

“That foot of snow [two weeks ago] ago really helped. It’s really good from Tower 3 down, but a little hard-packed on the top. It blows off up there and is hard to groom,” he said.

Due to lack of snow early in the season, the March 1 Snow Box Derby and Slush Cup races have been canceled.

The 30-acre ski hill began with a tractor-motor lift in 1947 and has been supported ever since with a host of volunteers. Rotarun hosts night skiing on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6-9 p.m.

Rotarun is also open weekends, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

“I was surprised how many kids we had [last] Wednesday night, which is generally our slowest day. Our numbers have picked up this year,” Smith said.

The kitchen at Rotarun serves meals, hot chocolate and sodas.

Adult ski passes at Rotarun cost $20 per day. Tickets for juniors under 18 cost $18. Kids under 5 ski free.
