SPORTS SUMMARY


 

Wood River High sets Spring Sports parent-player meetings

     Spring sports are just around the corner for athletes at Hailey’s Wood River High.

     Athletic director John Rade has scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 25 for the annual Spring Sports parent-player organization meeting. It will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the high school commons area. The meeting is for baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field.

 

B+ Hockey League back in action

     Hutch’s Bad Dogs (8-2-2) climbed back atop the B+ Hockey League standings with a 5-4 win over Sun Valley Auto Club/Vipers (2-8-2) on Sunday at Sun Valley Skating Center.

     Tom Cahill and Dan Choma each scored twice for Hutch’s. John Baker (1 assist) also scored. Assists went to Baba Street, Alex Baron and Ed Grimes. For the Vipers, Chris Salvatierra had two goals to go with singles by Dan Gralenski and Travis Kilmer, along with an assist to Mark Bucknall.

     Lampl’s Garage (5-7-0) was a 6-5 winner over Aardvarks (7-4-1) behind four goals off the stick of Clark Shafer (1 assist). Adding goals were Todd Avison (1 assist) and Matt Bauer. Ned Burns also assisted.

     For Aardvarks, goal scorers were Chris Corwin (2, with 1 assist), Eric Wingard (1 assist), Maico Johnson and Crugar Thomas. Wendy Speth and Bryan Furlong had helpers.

     Sharks (4-6-2) also tightened up the standings with an 8-6 success over the Flounders (6-5-1). Six different players got onto the Sharks scoring sheet—Alan Dupuis (2 goals, 2 assists), Jen Embree (1 goal, 2 assists), Dave Gittens, Ryan Baumgardner and Ken Pratt  (1 goal, 1 assist each), Sean Murphy (2 goals) and Shaun Kelly (1 goal).

     Flounders scorers were Jim Slanetz, Josh Green, Merri Whitehead and Gunnar Whitehead. Jeff Ballou assisted.

     Next up, on Sunday, Feb. 23: At 4 p.m., Flounders vs. Lampl’s; 5:15 p.m. Vipers vs. Sharks; and 6:30 p.m. Bad Dogs vs. Aardvarks. The Feb. 9 games will be rescheduled for later in the season.

 

SVSEF Freestyle team hosts Intermountain Championships

     Several Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Freestyle Team racers who have already qualified for Junior National competition will join the field for the Intermountain Divisional Championships Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 20-23 on Dollar Mountain and Baldy at Sun Valley Resort.

     Halfpipe competition kicks off the four-day event Thursday at 10 a.m. on Dollar Mountain, with slopestyle Friday at 10 a.m. on Dollar. The single moguls on Baldy’s Roundhouse Slope gets underway Saturday at 10 a.m., with dual moguls set to wrap up the event Sunday at 10 a.m., also on Roundhouse Slope.

 

Monroe Cup slalom, GS races this weekend

     The Intermountain Division North Series of alpine ski races for ages 8-11 are coming to Baldy this coming weekend, as Monroe Cup races are staged by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

     The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association event is for U-12 (ages 10-11) and U-10 (8-9) racers, with selected U-14 (ages 12-13) kids invited to compete. Slalom races on Baldy’s Hemnigway and Cozy ski run are Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9:30 a.m., followed by giant slalom events on Sunday. The U-12s are on Hemingway and the U-10s compete on Cozy.

 

IAHA State Hockey Tournaments in Idaho Falls

     Sun Valley Youth Hockey boys’ and girls’ teams will travel to Idaho Falls this weekend where the Idaho Amateur Hockey Association (IAHA) will conduct its state tournaments Feb. 21-23 at Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena.

     Competing will be the Midgets high school team (ages 15-18), along with the Bantams (13-14) and Girls’ U-19. Sun Valley’s U-14 girls’ team will play up in the U-19 division for this tournament.

     Teams from Boise, Idaho Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, Salmon and Sun Valley will play a total 25 games including all divisions, with championship contests running from 9:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

     The SVYH Midgets high school squad will play the Boise Steelheads Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Idaho Falls Saturday at 10:45 a.m. The SVYH Bantams go against Idaho Falls Friday at 8:10 p.m. and Boise Steelheads Saturday at 3 p.m.

     SVYH Girls’ U-14 plays McCall Friday at 3:05 p.m. then has two games Saturday—against Salmon at 12:10 p.m. and Idaho Falls at 8:15 p.m.

 

Mini World Cup slaloms

     The SVSEF U-12 Home Team staged slalom races Saturday, Feb. 15 on Baldy’s Cozy ski run. It was the final event in a series that included super giant slalom and downhill Jan. 25-26 on Dollar Mountain, and giant slalom Jan. 5 on Cozy. Top five girls and boys in slalom were:

     Girls: 1—Hannah Ferris 33.69 seconds. 2—Jessica Blackburn 34.02. 3—Saba Grossman 34.53. 4—Tatum Minor 35.61. 5—Laci Jermunson 35.76.

     Boys: 1—Connor Campbell 31.83. 2—Skye Leininger 32.82. 3—Shaw McCoubrey 35.26. 4—Leo Molter 35.39. 5—Axel Hattrup 35.41.
