AMHERST - Robert J. Ryan, 70, of Amherst, formerly of Sun Valley, Idaho, and Marlborough, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at his home.
Bob, to all who knew him, lived life to leave a positive impact on others, and to leave the world a more peaceful and accepting place.
Bob was born in the Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Raymond and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Ryan. He attended Fordham Preparatory High School and Le Moyne College where he studied biology, before receiving his master's Degree in higher education administration from Baruch College. After college he served in the U.S. Navy.
Bob was known for his wit, his endless energy, and his intellectual curiosity. He loved to travel, learn about new cultures, and mostly to meet new people. He relished any opportunity to both teach and learn, and continued taking and teaching classes throughout his life. It was rare to have a conversation with Bob where you did not leave a little wiser, a little more compassionate, and with a smile on your face.
Bob is survived by his former spouse, Ginger, five sons, Jeff, Paul, Brian, Colin and Matt, and his brothers Gerry and Don.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at John P. Rowe Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Marlborough, MA. Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life immediately following.
Bob will be cremated according to his wishes, with a burial to follow at the family's convenience.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club Foundation to honor Bob's love of education and the outdoors. www.sierraclubfoundation.org.
