SV5B swimmers set records at Washington meet

Maddie Johnson wins 200 fly

Sun Valley 5B swim team coach Brian Gallagher took a six-member squad from his year-round team to the 38th annual Washington Open Jan. 16-19 at Federal Way, Wash.

SV5B placed 13th in the final team standings of a meet with 850 swimmers from 65 teams and eight states.

Considered the best senior winter meet in the Northwest with strict qualifying times, the short-course yard competition sanctioned by USA Swimming was approved by Pacific Northwest Swimming, Inc.

Making the Washington Open trip after months of intense workouts at the Wood River Community Y pool in Ketchum were junior Kaedi Fry, sophomores Maddie Johnson and Ashley Dreyfus, and ninth-graders Katherine Lemma and Chiloe Spelius.

SV5B’s only male competitor at the Open was eighth-grader Mason Johnson.

Gallagher praised SV5B’s overall results and individual times, some of the best in the history of the team, stressing that between 250 and 350 swimmers competed in each individual event.

Maddie Johnson, 15, set the highest bar by winning 200 fly, and placing in the finals in all her other events. Her placings-events were: 5th-100 fly, 7th-200 I.M., 10th-100 back and 400 I.M., 11th-500 free; and 16th-200 back.

     Kaedi Fry, 17, placed 11th in 400 I.M. finals, 20th in 200 breast finals, 21st in both 200 I.M. and 100 breast finals, 39th-500 free, and 57th-100 free. Ashley Dreyfus, 16, was 74th-100 breast, 99th-200 breast, 137th-50 free, 152nd-100 fly and 179th-200 I.M.

Three others competing in their first Washington Open:

Chiloe Spelius, 15, placed in two finals, 18th-200 I.M. and 23rd-100 fly. She also placed 32nd-500 free, 38th-50 free, 40th-100 free and 61st-200 free.

     Katherine Lemma, 15, finished 55th-50 free, 65th-100 free, 102nd-100 breast, 132nd-200 free and 176th-200 I.M.

Mason Johnson, 13, placed well with personal-best efforts of 92th-500 free, 164th-200 free, 173rd-100 back, and 224th-100 free.

A force in women’s relays, SV5B placed 10th in 400 free (Johnson, Fry, Spelius, and Lemma), 13th-200 medley (Johnson, Fry, Spelius, and Lemma), and 18th-200 free (Fry, Spelius, Dreyfus and Lemma).
