Businesses should not thrive at expense of people

    It seems to be a common stand for Republican-minded politicians and persons of that bent to claim that raising the minimum wage would be bad for the economy because higher costs to the employers leads to them affording fewer employees. The counter argument exists, of course, and you know what it is if you are paying attention at all.
    I point out a very disgusting fact associated with the Republican argument noted above. The argument above says that if it is necessary for people to live in poverty so that businesses can succeed, so be it.  It is saying that the needs of companies trump the needs of people.
    Somebody has to flip the burger, fold the laundry, clean the toilet or raise the children. Not everyone will ever be given the opportunity to perform what is now a well-paid job because somebody must be left to these chores. These people deserve better than poverty because they are always needed doing what they are doing.
    A foundational principle for this country to live by must be: “The people of this country must be given the basic opportunity to at least survive and preferably thrive, even at the expense of the business enterprises of the country.” To understand this, study the reasonably new subject of sustainable development. Google that. Therein, people trump businesses. This is a planet of people who conduct business. This is not a planet of businesses that need a consumable resource called people.
    Every time we say, Dear Business, “Your employees have basic rights that trump yours. Deal with it.” … you know what? They do deal with it and they figure out how to thrive just fine. The notion that businesses come before people is grossly wrong.
