Squirts score big in Idaho Falls win

Weekend youth hockey


     Playing in Idaho Falls last weekend, the Sun Valley Youth Hockey Squirts (ages 9-10) won a tournament with a 4-0-1 overall record and 37-16 advantage in scoring.

     Sun Valley captured Sunday’s championship game 4-3 over Logan (Utah) with top scorer Deke Burrell (13 goals, 2 assists in 5 games) scoring a three-goal hat trick to go along with a single goal by Alex Lengyel. Squirts goalie Clayton Elsbree made 13 saves in the victory.

     The Squirts won their preliminary games 9-1 over Bozeman, 8-3 over Idaho Falls Black and 10-3 over Idaho Falls Gold. They tied Logan (Utah) 6-6 prior to Sunday’s final game between the two teams.

     Saturday morning, Burrell scored a pair of goals and seven other Suns contributed single goals in the 9-1 win over Bozeman. Goalie Elsbree (38 saves tournament) was called upon to make only six saves.

     Burrell (2), Wilson Webster (2), Slater Whitehead, Ashton Tanner, Jessie Burks and Lengyel scored for the Suns in the 8-3 triumph over Idaho Falls Black on Saturday evening.

     The 6-6 draw with Logan early Sunday morning featured a three-goal hat trick by Burrell along with two goals by Slater Whitehead and a single by Wilson Webster. Elsbree made 11 saves to preserve the tie.

     Sun Valley earned its championship game berth with the subsequent 10-3 win over Idaho Falls Gold as Burrell had another hat trick and Ashton Tanner added a pair. Goalie Sebastian Buxton contributed five saves.

     Weekend scorers for Sun Valley (goals/assists) were: Deke Burrell 13/2; Slater Whitehead 5/2; Ashton Tanner 4/3; Wilson Webster 3/2; Jessie Burks 2/3; Colby Speth 2/2; Zach Benson 1/3; Alex Lengyel 3/0; Finn Naghsh 2/1; Sebastian Buxton 1/0; Clayton Elsbree 1/0; and Jake Nikolaisons 0/1.
